According to the World Health Organization, the world may be on the brink of a new pandemic caused by the H5N1 influenza strain. This pandemic will affect all countries, widespread illness will occur, medical supplies will be inadequate, large numbers of deaths will occur, and economic and social disruption will be great. (www.who.int) In addition, young adults aged 15-35 will be highly susceptible to the H5N1 virus along with the very old and very young. Up to 40% of employees could be off the job at any given time and local communities will be looking to colleges and universities for assistance and support. How prepared is your institution? What can you do to improve preparedness plans? Do you have business continuity plans in place? How will you communicate with families and other community members?
