#1 - Campus Crime and Clery:  How Effective is it? Are Our Campuses Unsafe?

Presenter:  Dr. Dennis E. Gregory, Old Dominion University

Program Abstract:

Since its passage in 1990 the Clery Campus Safety Act has been touted as a way to increase information, decrease campus crime and improve campus safety.  Little research has been done on the effectiveness of this Act and whether or not there is a real problem with campus crime.  High profile cases such as those at Virginia Tech, Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan raise the intensity of the view of campus crime, but is it really a problem?  Why are campuses held to a higher standard that municipalities or other social agencies?  All of these issues will be address in this presentation.

Participants will learn about the Clery Act, about the research on the Clery Act and its impact on campus crime.  In addition, the session will cover campus policing and standards for such agencies, and will discuss statistics in Virginia and the southeastern US related to crime on campus.  The session will also explore why campuses are held to a higher standard.
